Can't be used on fresh joints with pipe dope

This is a very sensitive detector that has a fast response time of 0.2 sec. The unit has four ways to indicate gas has been detected: 1. the tip lights up, 2. the bar graph on the body, 3. the bar graph at the end of the handle, 4. rapid beeping. My unit comes with a rubber boot and an additional sensor tip to detect freon leaks.

What I don't like about the unit: 1. The sensor does a poor job of discriminating natural gas from other volatile organic gases and vapors. For example, faint concentrations of rubbing alcohol will set the unit off. Likewise, vapor coming from the solvents in fresh pipe dope will trigger the unit to give false indications of gas leak. This past weekend, my handyman was installing a water heater for me and he used pipe dope. After he finished installing the flex hose, I checked for leaks with this Bacharach detector and the unit repeatedly gas indication of a large leak. We spent almost an additional half hour trying to loosen and re-tighten the flex hose to no avail. Finally, I bought a new flex hose(more time and money wasted), but still the "leak" persisted. Then it dawned on me that perhaps the detector was picking up organic vapors from the pipe dope and not from a real natural gas leak.

As long as you know the limitations of this unit, it is a very sensitive unit with a very quick response time, but you can't use it to check for leaks on fresh installations where pipe dope was used.

Great Equipment, very easy to use!!

This was a great purchase. This is a very intuitive and easy to use tool. Worked out of the box, and actually we had a gas leak the same day we received the detector and learned to used on the actual leak. We have not use the freon tip yet, but once we do, I will update the review.
