Well Made Oscilloscope with the most Bang for the Buck.

When trying to choose a new scope to replace my older Tektronix Digital Scope I kind of went through the seven hells of frustration trying to figure out which one to buy. At first the choice seemed easy as Rigol seemed to be the rave, but on closer inspection of Rigol scopes I was not that impressed, I think a lot of Fan boy Rigol stuff started up because of the Fact that Agilent used Rigol to make their bottom of line scope model so people expect it to be very good and in some ways Rigols are good scopes.
The Owon or Aktakom as it goes by it's USA distributor is IMHO a best value right now because the construction and the features are top notch. Owon in making the SDS8200 series took care of most of the remaining problems in the 7100 series and they upped the capabilities quite a bit.
It's Fantastic 8 inch (800x600) HD screen is the best you can get in the sub $1500 level of scopes. The 10M memory depth is unheard of in a sub $3000 scope, no other model has this memory depth, most top out at about 1 or 2MB. The 2GB sampling rate is enormous for a scope in this price range, most are 500MB some are 1GB but 2GB is huge.
The construction as I said is top notch, it does not feel like a Chinese product it feels like something made in the USA, the fidelity of the signals it produces is very good, I tried mine up to 400 MHZ and while the signal had dropped about 6db it still had reasonable integrity. Using the 8202 within it's 200Mhz band range it performs like a champ, the triggering is solid, the waveform reproduction is accurate and looks oh so good on that 8" screen.
The other great feature of the Owon is that its one of the only full size DSO's that can also be used as a portable, it has a battery compartment under the bottom and uses a single 7.6V 8Amp rechargeable pack (~$59 extra) I highly suggest you get one as you can use the scope for 4 hours on batteries if you need it for field work.
The 8200 series and the 7100 series both have FFT built in which is great because the scope can double as a poor mans spectrum analyzer. I own a 1.8Ghz Tektronix Spectrum Analyzer and on comparison to the Owon I found the Owon was surprisingly good at displaying the Main Frequency but not so great on Harmonics.
The only negatives I have found so far with the Owon is that the Firmware is not fully developed. Don't get me wrong it does a ton of stuff (Make sure to download the pdf manual and take a look) and all of it works perfectly but Owon has yet to really Tap into this Fantastic screen on the scope. They could use it to do split screen Zoom but they don't. They could add in a number of other menu functions and take better advantage of all the fantastic screen space and the really fine dot pitch they have available. During my research leading up to my purchase I did a lot of reading and found that Owon was resistant to firmware changes claiming that they had no Bugs in their firmware! Recently they did a 180 and are now releasing updates to add new features, this is great news as it means that the current Owon scopes may all be getting more features added.
In summary I am impresses, it's a lot of scope for the money and while it may not be as popular as the Rigol it sure beats the crap out of a Rigol 1052 or any of those other Rigols in that sub $1200 price range and that's why I say for right now it's the Best bang for the buck.

Great scope for the money, dispite minor limitations

Great value and capability for a very reasonable price. The scope did everything it was supposed to do right out of the box, was easy to learn how to operate, and has been a great asset for our electronics lab. Various triggering options have worked well for us for tracking down and capturing some rather nasty pulsed discharge events. Memory and recall functions work well. Downloading data to computer worked with minimal software headaches. Documentation, although sometimes humorously poor translation to English, is fairly accurate and readable. Minor faults: Scope is so light that when standing on it's feet, you have to support the back of it while pushing some of the upper buttons to avoid tipping it over. Have noticed that when measuring some high impedance signals that the probe load on the X1 setting is higher than expected (this may be related to provided probes rather than scope itself), so I sometimes use X10 for lower voltage signals as well, and sacrifice S/N ratio for reduced loading if required. Finally, we have been working with high voltage spark discharge in the lab, and have found the high radiated EMF can sometimes lock-up the scope. We solved this by putting the scope in a Faraday cage, but most users probably wouldn't see this problem (the radiated EMF sometimes interferes with PC's in the vicinity as well). Some buttons on the front panel are already showing a little cosmetic wear after just a month or two of operation, so this might be a sign that the scope won't last 30 years like my analog antique, but considering the good value for such a low price, I can afford to replace it after a few years of hard use and will still be happy.

Everything they specify is accurate and functions well. I went through the extensive manual and tested every feature I could and I was very satisfied. If you do the math and the sample rate is enough for your application, this is a great device.
I was also surprised to find out that it came with two probes, not just one.

The Owon Series SmartDS is a two-channel digital oscilloscope with a maximum real-time sample rate of 250 MS/s per channel (500 MS/s interleaved) to 1.6 GS/s per channel (3.2 GS/s interleaved) depending upon the model, a record length of 10 Mpts per channel, advanced triggering, three math functions and FFT, 20 automatic measurements, auto-scale function, pass/fail testing, a VGA port, and USB connectivity for electronics applications such as product design and debugging, repair and servicing, and electrical engineering education, among others. The high sample rate and deep memory enable long capture times for processing and displaying detailed waveforms. An external channel can trigger from a third source while acquiring data from channels 1 and 2. Edge, pulse width, slope, and video triggers allow isolation of specific signals, an alternate trigger allows simultaneous observation of two unrelated signals, and a trigger hold-off function stabilizes triggering on complex waveforms. The oscilloscope's math functions—add, subtract, and multiply—plus FFT (fast Fourier transform) and automatic measurements such as period, frequency, and peak-to-peak enable an in-depth analysis of waveforms. An auto-scale function selects the optimal settings for displaying a waveform, and can be disabled for educational exercises. Pass/fail mask testing determines whether a signal falls within the user-programmed settings. Up to 15 waveforms can be stored in the internal memory. Additional specifications include a rise time of 5.8 ns for the 60 MHz model, 3.5 ns for the 100 MHz models, 1.7 ns for the 200 MHz model, and 1.17 ns for the 300 MHz model, and various triggering features.
